Newsletter

Tropical Mac, the official newsletter

Tropical Mac is the monthly Gold Coast Mac newsletter, distributed free of charge every month to members. A paper copy is mailed to members at home, and copies are also available at resellers around South Florida.

If you haven't yet joined, or if you misplaced your paper copy, we offer our newsletter online in PDF format. It's the same, full version you would get on paper, but without killing trees. Just click on a newsletter link in the column on the right to download. Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to read the newsletters. Get Acrobat Reader.

How to
Review

We realize most people are not professional writers, and we want to make it easy as possible for you to submit items for the newsletter. Here are some suggestions for writing a successful article.

Be Conversational
Don't try to impress people with your knowledge of tech terms and your extensive vocabulary. You're passing along information for friends.

For Reviews:
Answer the following questions, not necessarily in this order, and you'll have the basis for a decent review.

  • What does the product do?
  • What type of user is it targeted for?
  • How much experience do you need?
  • How hard was it to learn?
  • Was the documentation useful?
  • Do they have a website for help?
  • 5 things you like the best
  • 5 things you most dislike
  • Did the product meet expectations?
  • Would you recommend it?
  • Publisher, Price, and website URL
  • Think... would this review be useful to ME?

When it's
Due

If you accepted a door prize or a raffle item, you agreed to review the product for the newsletter. Reviews are one way we convince developers to donate items for prizes.

You have 60 days, or 2 months, from the time you win until your review is done.

REVIEWS ARE DUE by the Friday following each General Membership Meeting.

REVIEWS SHOULD BE, at minimum, at least 4 paragraphs in length (not simply sentences), and cover the main points mentioned in "How to Review." Reviews of large, complicated programs (think Office or InDesign) should be longer.

SUBMISSIONS FORMAT: Word or plain text files.

SUBMISSIONS SHOULD BE SENT as e-mail attachments to Esver Camacho 1esver@bellsouth.net

PLEASE include any artwork (product shots, a few screen shots [make them by using command-shift-3]) and include the URL of the company in your e-mail.

Remember, the reviews are an obligation, but they also a great way to share your good fortune with other club members!
